a fresh voice

Hey guys, I'm a newb to the Pomona blogs but glad they exist! Thanks for caring about our town. I actually bought Nell Soto's old house on Orange Grove and Huntington in district 1 (and since then had numerous knocks on the door with some interesting stories).

I had no idea when I bought the place 3 years ago that Pomona had such neglected areas, or that there was such corruption in our elected officials. Since moving in I've experienced auto theft, drug deals on my block, and a general lack of neighborly behavior. That being said, I want to help facilitate some change in this town and have no idea how. I call the graffiti hotline and ask Pomona pd to come by when homeless are going through my trashcans or soliciting off the White ave off ramp but that's not much. What would you suggest?

Get a big scary dog, and a digital video surveillance system for your house and send the feed directly to the Pomona PD. Has done wonders in our neighborhood. Keep reporting things that happen to the PD, keep your house tidy, and be friendly to your neighbors. Its going to keep getting better here...it has been for the past 15 years and continues even through this downturn.

Great advice Anonymous...what the hell. You gotta have Moxy to live in Pomona. Its a great little town even with all of its problems, and it does keep getting better. Redevelopment continues and the good areas are getting better and slowly spreading. The problem is that you are in a transitional area, so its a bit sketchier than in the other historic districts, Phillips Ranch, or north Pomona. I am predicting that 2013 is going to be a huge year for socioeconomic gentrification in Pomona...housing sales are already demonstrating that.

Things will improve as soon as Rothman is dragged out in chains. Sleaze does not begin to describe him.

Does anyone know (or care) who the elected Mayor of Pomona is ???

It is 24 hours after poll closings and there is NOTHING on the Daily Bulletin Website re results on the Mayoral, council district or Pomona Proposition results !!!!!

Please send up smoke signals of results for those who may have voted !!!!!

I moved here from Glendale about 9 years ago myself. I knew Pomona in general wasn't the best city. I thought of it as the L.A. in the valley. Like L.A., it has its mix of good and bad areas. I didn't care because I figured I'm only here for a bit then I'll rent my house and move out.

Thank goodness I didn't move. Why? The economy tanked and It's so cheap now! My street is pretty calm and you'd be amazed how cheap my mortgage is (cheaper than renting an apartment). I went through a job loss and it didn't even affect it.

I've helped clean up my street by getting neighbors involved when any strange activity happens. The police's non-emergency number works great. I've had awesome response times. I joined the Pomona Police Citizens Academy and got to meet and learn about our great PD. I strongly recommend you do this to understand the inner workings. It's an 8 week program that is only once a week in the evenings. All you have to be is a resident.

Also, when I first moved in 2003, neighbors who have been here for many years told me about the horror stories of the 80s and 90s. So like LinknPark says, it is getting better. But at the same time, there are alot of people being released from prison right now, and this is having a huge impact in the uptick in crime in the area (including Claremont, La Verne, Chino, etc).
