weekend update

A bunch of us did indeed gather down at dba256 on thursday, at Tibbi's instigation. He informed me when I arrived that I'd just missed George & Paula themselves, which is a darned shame. But I did get to meet, in addition to Tibbi, Anduhrew, Ed + his less-inflammatory half, and Calwatch. We oughta think about having a monthly gathering down at dba.

One thing that arose from our wide-ranging discussion was that Calwatch has now been added to M-M-M-My Pomona's gallery of rogues as an author (joining K & me, Ed, and the imperturbable John Clifford). Now, y'all treat him nice, at least to start out with.

I'm imperturbable? Hmmmm . . . don't ask Deb.

We're sorry that we couldn't be at dba on Thursday, but our season tickets to the Mark Taper fell on that day (and don't get Deb started on how the Taper's programming has gone to hell since Michael Ritchie succeeded Gordon Davidson---ooh, that sounded almost snobbish). Really sorry we missed it. And, if I've got the right guy, I believe that Tibbi comes from a fairly large family -- We noted how he tried to fill our wine glasses to the "exact" same level--A true sign that someone came from a family where "everyone gets equal."

Congratulations Cal on joining the ranks.

It was indeed great to meet all you guys. we should indeed do this once a month or so.

There was a checkpoint tonight on Garey Ave and Lexington. My girlfriend had been drinking but I had stopped about three to four hours prior and we had an open bottle of whiskey in the trunk. The police man had me stop and checked my ID and then waved us by. No checking my eyes or smelling my car or breath. For some reason it did not feel like a DUI checkpoint but more like a "do you have your papers" checkpoint.

Say what you like but I don't like it at all. Is there a way I can know where these are ahead of time? I feel improperly invaded.

Andy- keep tabs on the Daily Bulletin. Pomona PD always posts checkpoint information in the paper. It gives the days cehckpoints are planned, as well as the (main) street involved.

Some of the checkpoints are, in fact, for sobriety. Other checkpoints are intended to audit for drivers' licenses and/or insurance.

Either way, I think the checkpoints are important-

We totalled a car one time because of an uninsured driver (who was at fault), but because an anonymous caller (wonder who?)lied to my girlfriend's insurance, the company decided to hold us accountable instead of the uninsured party- (which was in the company's best interest)

...so I can tell you- it's NOT about immigration or "papers," and I couldn't be happier that it's done that way.

Now, if there were immigraition officials off to the side to collec those without "papers," then I could see your point. It's about overall safety.

Who wants to come and spend money in a city, or visit friends and family when a huge danger of beinh hit by a drunk and /or uninsured driver is prevalent?

i hate that we can't edit our comments once we've posted them.

Most cops that work DUI detail can tell drunks pretty quickly. When they ask for ID they are already mentally checking for alcohol consumption. It should be noted that the DUI checkpoints never check for insurance.

I would have to agree with anduhrew on this one......somethings seems fundamentally wrong with being forced to stop at checkpoints here in the US? I have heard the various arguments for there continued use, however I am simply not a believer. I suspect the biggest reason for there continued use boils down to the money generated for the police/city.

I'm wary of this because of the Josh Connole story. i don't know if you all know it, but in an e-mail sent by a Regen Co-op resident "Although they have no evidence connecting Josh to this incident, the FBI, along with the ATF, had been following him for several weeks. After his arrest, the FBI turned their attention to his home, the Regenerative Cooperative, also home to 14 other co-op members, and surrounded the house for hours while waiting for state and federal warrants to search the co-op" they confiscated Computers (of mostly graduate students from Claremont colleges, Cal Poly, and CSUF) Josh Connole was accused of setting fire to Hummer Dealerships

This was back in 2003. I understand the many Benefits of checkpoints and I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist, but I don't believe they're as innocent as we all think.

There are pros and cons. I can't deny that.

forgot to mention he was a peace and environmental activist who was accused of setting fire to Hummer dealerships in the Covina area.

Josh Connole is my third cousin and he is a bit of a strange bird. Still not quite sure about what happened there, but it was all strange indeed.

He may have been strange but he was the wrong strange guy, They eventually found the right strange people, at CalTech. (those Pasadena students are no good)

I'd like to put a plug in for the Riverside Grill, located at 5258-Riverside Dr., Chino. The food is very good, prices are right, and the service is excellent. Also, it's owned by a Lincoln Park neighbor, Rodrigo Avila and his brother. Rodrigo lives on Alvarado.

And thanks to Rodrigo, we found a tremendous source for FREE plants and trees. Go north on Towne, right on Baseline, left on Mills, right on Mt. Baldy Rd. There will be a sign on the left indicating free plants. It's an old nursery that apparently has been there for years. The owner died about four years ago so the place is a bit neglected. Take a truck, shovel, dolly, other garden implements. This has been going on for a couple of weeks that I know of, so it's somewhat picked over. However, there are still many gems available.

Go Kate! Those guys are the best and the food at the Riverside Grill is great. My wife and I are big fans of their lunches.
