Homicide in Lincoln Park

Unfortunately, this is a much less positive post than my last one. Emails have started to go around concerning an incident in the 500 block of McKinley last night (Friday).

I had this email forwarded to me that originally came from Councilwoman Paula Lantz and I'm sure it's probably the most up-to-date info at the moment. (portions of the email that were not relevant have been edited out).

There was a homicide in the 500 block of McKinley. I don’t know the address. The victim was sitting on his front porch and was shot several times. I don’t know if it was a drive-by, or something up-close-and-personal. Like you [referring to the person who sent me the email], I heard the shots about 11 p.m. then the sirens and helicopter. At last report there were no suspects in custody, but it was considered gang related.

I was by this morning, thinking there would still be yellow tape somewhere, but there wasn’t. If occupants of that home appear to be “bangers,” that is also something to mention at Monday’s meeting. I have alerted our new CSO, Carlos Hernandez, that there will be lots of questions about last night. I just don’t know what they will be able to share at that point. If you want to put this on the e-hotline, you are welcome to.

Paula

I hope that the reference to e-hotline also gives me permission to put the information up here as well.

The meeting referenced is a Neighborhood Watch Block Captain's meeting which will be held Monday evening . If anyone has more information about this, please feel free to comment below.

Do we have a more exact location than the 500 block? I'm trying to figure out where the blue dot falls.

I'll also take this moment to point out that the PD's press releases should be on city's website.

I live-twittered the event and I thought it was south of Alvarado, based on the direction of where I thought the shots were coming from from my open window (which faces south). Obviously I heard a ricochet. There were about eight shots, all in rapid succession.

10 Pomona PD cars responded and PD helicopter

There MAY have been two shooters.

I've been trying for months to get access to our city's press releases. They don't appear on the website (well, a cherry picked outdated few do), and e-mails to the PR department yield no response.

Is the Monday evening meeting just for the Block Captains in Lincoln Park? If not, I'd be interested in attending (I don't know anything about it, so I'm assuming it isn't a city wide thing). Does anyone know?

Yes, the Monday Night meeting is for Block Captains, but any news or info coming from it will be posted to M-M-M-Y Pomona. Here under this topic.

Well, this house won't ever sell then.

To Everyone,
What is printed here is all I know at this time. There will be an officer at the Monday meeting who will be able to update you with whatever he/she is able to share at the time. While it is, technically, a Block Captain's meeting, Pride in Garfield Park is a Block Captain, just not in Lincoln Park. Besides, my mindset is that we aren't exclusive, but inclusive, and given recent events, if you would like to come, please join us. Lincoln Park,6:30, bring something to sit on.
Unfortunately I have a schedule conflict, and won't be able to be there. I'm bringing the drinks, but can't stay. I'm sure that our new CSO, Carlos Hernandez, will take good notes and follow-up.
Any questions, feel free to email me at Paula_Lantz@ci.pomona.ca.us
I do actually reply!
Paula

Six sentence very small 'blurb' buried in second section of Sunday Daily Bulletin...

Must be a very insignificant unimportant story.

Try not to think about it; maybe it will 'go away.'

PiGP: The M-M-M-My Pomona translation tool translates that comment as "Spam, spam, and more spam!" and I have consequently deleted it.

The victim had three little girls and his oldest one found him on the front porch. Allegedly, he was shot in the head 3 times. One of his dogs also died (apparently from stress). This is truly a tragedy and a sad note in Lincoln Park's history.

according to the police, the victim was a 12th street gang member and this was possibly a hit by the mexican mafia. while it is sad that 3 children are without a father, if he was in the game, then he knew this was a likely outcome. It's too bad he made such bad choices, especially when he had 3 children depending on him. He put his own children in harm's way, and I am thankful that they were not physically hurt too.

This still shows up on Google searches people. Way to go posting Homicide in Lincoln Park....dont we all own homes here....you are doing a bang up job continuing to bring down housing prices. Remove maybe...although this will probably remained cached for months after you do. Thanks again for continuing to hurt the homeowners of this great community.

I'm afraid I don't agree with you, Anon. Should we censor the history of the neighborhood, pretend that Emilio Moncayo didn't die, relegate such information to gossip and rumor? Perhaps you think the LAT should block access to such information too? When I do a search for pomona+homicide+mckinley, the first eight hits are the newspaper, not this blog.

I say let the history of our fair city remain here in the form of past conversations. If I were moving into the neighborhood, I would want to read about this, both the fact of the murder and the response of the neighbors and the cognizant City Councilperson.

Easy for you to say...you no longer have a vested interest in the neighborhood because you are no longer here. This blog is no longer topical and is by no means a place in which to celebrate the positive aspects of this city and its unique neighborhoods...instead its kind of a taudry laundry list of the various problems that the city has as purported by the various biased interests that blog here. Thats also the reason that nobody except for the inner circle of Pomona Heritage and a couple of city officials frequents this place....and of course any potential home buyers searching for information on "Lincoln Park Pomona", at which time, they dont find newspaper articles about homicides in Lincoln Park, but instead your stupid blog with the word "homicide" next to it.

Thanks for continuing to hurt your former neighbors that are struggling to keep their homes and livelihoods in a city and neighborhood that your blog portrays as much worse that it really is. For people reading this blog or comment, this is by no means representative of this neighborhood, and it really is a wonderful place to live, despite it occasional problems.

I wish you people would stop being so old and out of touch with the way the world and society works today. You wanna change Pomona and Pomona's neighborhoods....start talking about the good things in regards to living here...put them online, because for anyone under 40, thats their primary information source. Your blog is a big fat reminder of this city's problems, and a guarantee that good people wouldnt dare want to move here. Good job once again. This place is a wonderful place to live, and its terrible people like you and your cronies who continue to keep things status quo.

Anon, if you think so little of the blog and those who read it, why do you keep coming back? And why are you spending time to keep it alive (which you do by commenting)?

This blog has never pretended to be anything but a place where Pomonans can talk about our fair city, with whatever slants and biases enable their lives. Anyone who wishes to change the tenor of the blog need only let me know and I'll make him/her an author. Anyone who wishes to shut it down, however (as you seem to), will be sadly disappointed, at least until every last one of us loses interest.
